Our goal was not far away - a monument to a Kiwi who served in the First World War and married my great aunt in 1919 in Wiltshire. George Bartrum Baker farmed at Cave and was recognised for his pioneering work developing modern grassland farming methods. The memorial at Motakaika is for his work as Chairman of the New Zealand Rabbit Destruction Council and the local Rabbit Board! The rabbit was introduced to New Zealand as a food source but, as rabbits are prone to do, they multiplied at such a rate that they became pests, ruining the valuable sheep pastures. It took many years to eradicate the pests and George was the driving force that kept the seemingly hopeless project going until the problem was solved. Although it has a longer, more important title it is lovingly referred to as The Rabbit Monument by the family.
